What does success mean to you?
If you google the word "success" the meaning described below will show up and it would say that success is "the accomplishment of an aim or purpose."
Now, if we look at that meaning closely, success only happens after the accomplishment of something, an aim or purpose, usually something that we desire. If it's not accomplished then how can we call it success?
In every thing that we do there are only two things that can happen, success and failure. You either make it or break it.
Success only happens after something that we desire to happen is done. It's only the after-the-fact that something is finished. Successfully making a cup of coffee requires that you make a cup of coffee. If you don't, then you didn't make a cup of coffee. I know that sounds stupendously simple and I hope that you can follow along with me just for a little bit.
You either get to work on time or you don't. You either hit your sales quota or you don't. You either achieve your goals or you don't. Whatever it is that you desire or the thing that you hope to accomplish, when we make it happen, only then we can call it a success.
Now let's look at this another description of success defined by Earl Nightingale. He says that "success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal."
This means that you are successful as long as you are working towards your goal. You are successful because you are progressively realizing something that you deemed worthy. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are working towards them, as you long as you don't quit and keep on going, you are and will be successful.
The way he describes success recognizes the work, the effort required to be truly successful in life. Success doesn't happen overnight, well at least not the giant goals that we set for ourselves.
If you noticed, that the first meaning we described earlier focuses on the end results. While that is very important, it's also as equally important to include the actual progression of manifesting that we desire as part of success. This includes the obstacles, the rejections, and the many challenges every entrepreneur will come to. Let's face it, we will always face tribulation, no matter what we are trying to accomplish. Look, life itself is full of ups and downs, and so is success!
The flip side of success
The reason why I am bringing these two definitions together is because of what the masses think of what success is all about. Most people only see the glory of success, the actual accomplishment of an aim or purpose, and they forget to include what it takes to get to that point. So when they face a couple of hardships and struggles in attempting to reach success, most people would just simply give up.
Here are a few of the many successful you might know who faced failure multiple times:
Hear this out, the people I described above never quit, and while Earl Nightingale would define them as successful during their "progressive realization", they would not be successful if they simply succumb to their temporary setbacks. They had to continue and persist to achieve success. Every advancement that mankind has ever achieved in medicine, technology, and the human potential itself required overcoming obstacles and challenges. If we have never pushed through, then we are denying of what we are truly capable as human beings.
"Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal."
If we are aiming something that don't require us to increase our awareness, then we are not setting the right kind of goals asBob Proctor would say. Goals are supposed to cause a person to expand and develop. So if we're not setting those types of goals, then we are not really trying to reach our full potential.
So the next time you face adversity in your entrepreneurial endeavor, remember that this is a necessary part of success. You've got to push through because you know that this is completely normal. You've got to say to yourself, "It's POSSIBLE" and hold a mental of picture of what you define as success. As last reminder that whatever goal, aim, target, or worthy ideal you are working to achieve, as long as you keep on going at it, you are and will be successful.
Memorize this quote by Earl Nightingale and it would help you push through whatever challenges you might encounter.
"SUCCESS IS THE PROGRESSIVE REALIZATION OF A WORTHY GOAL OR IDEAL."
