Grant starts out by briefly stating the money problems many average Americans face. For example, he points out that we live in one of the wealthiest nations in the world, yet "76% of people live paycheck to paycheck, some 50% of Americans have no money for retirement and 47% of Americans don't have $400 for an emergency."
We attend to schools, colleges, and universities so that our teachers and professors can teach us so many other things, all except on the subject on becoming very rich, let alone money. On top of that, we have been given bad information all our lives from saving money just for the sake of saving to avoiding debt at all cost, and even on investing by simply handing our hard-earned money to the Wall Street guys who don't even know what they're selling. He then ends the first chapter by telling a powerful personal story of how he was so excited walking to the store only to drop the only quarter he had into a manhole. In attempting to retrieve it, he kneels on the ground but find it to be out of his reach. He gets angry and even remember wanting to cry. He later tells his father about it and says to him, "You shouldn't play with money." His grandfather then says to him, "Son, the problem isn't simply that you lost the quarter; the problem is that it was your only quarter." From then on, Grant decided that he would ammass enourmous amount of wealth. Watch Chap 1 on video!
