The Transcript: Make Your Bed Speech
It was May 17th, 2014 and it was the day the University of Texas students, Class of 2014 were about to graduate. The speaker who delivered the commencement speech was Admiral William H. McRaven. But who cares right?
Well, Admiral McRaven has served the nation for thirty-three years as a Navy SEAL. He has commanded at every level in the ranks, from trainee to a four-star naval admiral through his distinguished level of service. But who cares right?
Surprisingly the commencement speech was enlightening. It's not your typical graduation speech that lasts for a few hours. Admiral McRaven shares his the ten most important lessons he learned in the military in 18-short minutes, yet its virtually guaranteed to leave you feeling inspired to do the little things that can change your life... and maybe the world.
So I present to you the transcript of the "Make Your Bed" Speech. Enjoy!
Lesson #1: If you want to change the world... start off by making your bed.
Every morning in basic SEAL training, my instructors, who at the time were all Vietnam veterans, would show up in my barracks room and the first thing they would inspect was your bed. If you did it right, the corners would be square, the covers pulled tight, the pillow centered just under the headboard and the extra blanket folded neatly at the foot of the rack — that's Navy talk for bed.
Lesson #2: If you want to change the world... find someone to help you paddle.
Lesson #3: If you want to change the world... measure a person by the size of their heart.
Lesson #4: If you want to change the world... get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward.
Lesson #5: If you want to change the world... don't be afraid of The Circus.
Lesson #6: If you want to change the world... slide down the obstacle headfirst.
Lesson #7: If you want to change the world... don't back down from the sharks.
Lesson #8: If you want to change the world... be your very best in the darkest moments.
Lesson #9: If you want to change the world... start singing when you're up to your neck in mud.
Lesson #10: If you want to change the world... don't ever, ever ring the bell.
The speech ends with...
To the graduating class of 2014, you are moments away from graduating. Moments away from beginning your journey through life. Moments away from starting to change the world — for the better. It will not be easy.
